House of St. Michael wins Catholic Schools Week canned food drive, school totals over 800 cans for community
St. Francis Xavier (SFX) Catholic School Principal Mary Paige Griffin announced on Friday that the House of St. Michael the Archangel won the Catholic Schools Week (CSW) canned food drive and that the school successfully raised over 800 cans for those in need.
SFX School’s mission is not only to motivate students to achieve academically but also to faithfully serve God and their communities. This week, SFX students demonstrated their dedication to loving their neighbors by raising a total of 829 canned food items, which the SFX Parish will deliver to the Catholic Center of Concern, which provides direct aid to the poor in the Birmingham Diocese.
At the beginning of the school year, all middle schoolers are assigned to one of three houses: the House of St. Michael the Archangel, the House of St. Gabriel the Archangel and the House of St. Raphael the Archangel. These houses regularly compete for points throughout the year.
Last week, elementary school classrooms teamed up with the middle school houses to see who could raise the most canned food items.
The House of St. Raphael teamed up with the second and fourth graders and raised 137 cans.
The House of St. Gabriel the Archangel teamed up with Pre-K, first and third graders, and raised 330 cans.
Finally, the House of St. Michael the Archangel teamed up with kindergarten and fifth grade to raise a whopping 362 cans, bringing the school’s total to 829.
“It feels good to win,” said eighth-grader Izzy Whaley, who is a member of the House of St. Michael. “We get a chance to prove ourselves as leaders of the school.”
