Kindergarten students learn about librarians, firefighters, police officers during community helpers field trip
Mrs. Emily Holt’s Kindergarten class learned about various community service roles during their field trip to Homewood on Friday.
The St. Francis Xavier (SFX) Catholic School Kindergarten class first went to the Homewood Public Library, where they learned about how to check out books and the variety of summer activities available to them after their last day of school on Wednesday.
After that, they went to the Homewood Fire Station 1, where firefighters with the Homewood Fire Department taught them about firefighter gear and equipment and showed them around a real-life fire truck and the station, where firefighters in Homewood live for a third of the year.
Students even got to try on a firefighter’s vest, try lifting the jaws of life, and spray the fire hose!
Mrs. Holt’s class then ate lunch back at the library and returned to the school to meet with SFX School Resource Officer (SRO) Deputy Marcellius Winston with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Winston showed students his patrol car and even let some of them sit in the back!
“I would like to thank the Homewood Library and Homewood Fire Station for welcoming and informing us on what your job entails,” said Mrs. Holt. “I would also like to thank Deputy Winston for taking the time to come talk to us and inform us on what he does for his job.”
