Students gear up for Catholic Schools Week at SFX Catholic School
Students at St. Francis Xavier (SFX) Catholic School are gearing up for Catholic Schools Week (CSW), which begins on Sunday, January 28, and ends on Friday, February 2.
The theme of this year’s CSW is faith, excellence and service.
At SFX school, faith in Jesus Christ is the foundation of our work. SFX faculty members guide students as they form excellent habits and imitate Christ through virtue. Finally, everyone at SFX School is committed to serving Christ through serving our fellow human beings.
“[CSW] is a very important part of our school’s teaching,” said SFX 8th grader Andrew Smitherman, who currently serves as the school’s student body president. “It allows students to see what the goal of our Catholic school is and to truly express themselves.”
SFX students will lead Mass parts for all weekend Masses at the SFX Parish. Representatives for the school will be present in the vestibule before and after Mass next to the CSW display. They will be able to answer questions about the school and provide information about applications for the 2024-2025 school year. Applications open on February 1st.
The school also invites prospective parents and students to come see the school in an Open House on Sunday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The SFX School choir will sing at the 11:00 a.m. Mass.
Next week, SFX’s three middle school houses will compete in a canned food drive. At the beginning of the school year, all middle schoolers are assigned to one of three houses: the House of St. Michael the Archangel, the House of St. Gabriel the Archangel and the House of St. Raphael the Archangel.
During CSW, elementary classrooms will team up with middle school houses to see who can raise the most food for those in need.
SFX will also celebrate CSW with designated dress-up days and surprises for students and parents.
On Monday, students will be permitted to wear cozy clothes and pajamas.
On Tuesday, students will dress like a teacher or staff member of their choice. Students will also receive a special treat!
On Wednesday, students will wear red, white and blue accessories with their school uniform. Of course, these accessories must be removable for Wednesday Mass.
Thursday is John Carroll Catholic High School (JCCHS) Spirit Day. Currently, SFX eighth-graders are preparing to transition to JCCHS next fall.
Also on Thursday, Sister Emma Rueda of the Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary will speak to students in all grades about vocations.
SFX School will conclude CSW with SFX School Spirit Day on Friday. The school will provide donuts for parents in the carline and SFX 6th graders will attend Mass at St. Paul’s Cathedral in downtown Birmingham with other 6th graders in the Diocese of Birmingham.
St. Francis Xavier Catholic School is an accredited classical Catholic PreK-8 school in Birmingham’s Crestline neighborhood that uses the time-tested Catholic Intellectual Tradition to form students in virtue through the pursuit of academic excellence and service toward God and neighbor.
