5th through 8th graders compete with other Catholic schools at John Carroll for Birmingham Diocese’s Field Day

St. Francis Xavier (SFX) Catholic School 5th through 8th graders competed in a variety of athletic events on Friday, April 12, at the Birmingham Diocese’s Field Day at John Carroll Catholic High School (JCCHS).

Students competed against other Catholic schools in the Birmingham area. Events included several track races and field events such as shock put and the long jump. 

The following students won 1st or 2nd Place ribbons:

  • Andrew Smitherman - 8th Grade Boys 800 Meter Race (1st Place)

  • Gabriel Ezquerra - 7th Grade Boys 800 Meter Race (1st Place), 7th Grade Boys 400 Meter Race (1st Place)

  • Ally Vargas - 7th Grade Girls 400 Meter Race (1st Place), 7th Grade Girls 100 Meter Race (2nd Place), 

  • Izaiah Hurbert - 6th Grade Boys 400 Meter Race (1st Place), 6th Grade Boys 400 Meter Race (2nd Place)

  • Lucy Ortiz - 6th Girls Boys 50 Meter Race (1st Place)

  • Izaac Hurbert - 5th Grade Boys 800 Meter Race (1st Place)

  • Max MacCann - 5th Grade Boys 100 Meter Race (1st Place)

  • Lila Thompson - 8th Grade Girls Long Jump (2nd Place)

  • Eden Robinson - 8th Grade Girls 50 Meter Race (2nd Place)

  • Emma Pascual-Pedro - 7th Grade Girls 800 Meter Race (2nd Place)

  • Waverly Robinson - 6th Grade Girls 800 Meter Race (2nd Place)

  • Elian Becerril-Romero - 6th Grade Boys 50 Meter Race (2nd Place)

SFX students also placed in multiple team competitions throughout the day.

Izaac Hurbert (5th Grade), Izaiah Hurbert (6th Grade), Reid Pate (7th Grade), and Jordan Beckham (8th Grade) won 1st Place in the 4x100 Meter Mixed Grade Boys Race.

Eighth Graders Joe Cannova, Jon Sransky, Angel Mateo, and Simon Jabines won 2nd place in the 4x100 Meter Boys Relay.

“Thank you to everyone who helped us out with the event: John Carroll, the teachers who attended, and the parent volunteers,” said SFX School’s Coach Jeff Berry. “This event is always a highlight of the springtime for each school year and it is a great opportunity for our students to compete, cheer each other on, and represent our school. We are so proud of our students and their amazing effort.”

After graduation from SFX School, most students attend the 9th through 12th Grades at JCCHS. Though SFX School offers its students opportunities to participate in its own athletic programs, SFX 7th and 8th Graders can try out for JCCHS sports, including football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, baseball, and more.
